This building in Dubai is now considered as one of the worlds tallest structures even though its completion date is still in the year 2008 and will be ready for occupancy in 2009. This building is part of the 2 square kilometer development called Downtown Dubai. Even though it is not completed yet, it now holds numerous world records, namely: Building having the most floors which is 146, Vertical concrete pumping in a building and vertical concrete pumping for any other construction at 536 meters. The final height of the building is still undisclosed as of the moment to guard it from being surpassed by new buildings being constructed at the same time. Estimates of the total height of the building run at 700 meters to 800 meters, even at its minimum estimate it would still be the tallest man-made structure ever built on earth.

The Burj Dubai will become the centerpiece of the Downtown Dubai project. Complementing the building are 9 hotels scattered along the area, 30,000 homes, 19 high rise residential towers and the Dubai mall. Burj Dubai was built to support the vision of the Government of Dubai to shift its economy from a trade based one to a service and tourism one. With the creation of Burj Dubai, more investments would pour into the city.

The Burj Dubai tower is presently constructed by the Samsung Engineering and Construction group and is designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The designers of this tower were also the ones who designed the Sears Tower and the Freedom Tower. Its design is looks like a bundled tube. Characteristics of Islamic architecture were carefully integrated into the design of this building.

The outer part of the building consists of aluminum and steel and is designed to withstand the toughest dessert climate. The interiors are decorated by the world famous Giorgio Armani and would include many luxurious amenities.
