The Bastakiya district is a popular destination which brings back images of the old Dubai. Tourists visit the area for its narrow lanes, wind towers and beautiful Arabian architecture. In this area, you would see the original courtyard houses with wind towers. These wind towers served as cooling systems for the houses way before electricity reached this area.
The Grand Mosque which is located in the Bur Dubai side of the city is famous because it has the tallest minaret in the city. The minaret is 70 meters high which could clearly be seen from afar. The Grand Mosque was actually constructed in 1900 but because of damages was reconstructed in 1998. The reconstruction made the Mosque very beautiful and could accommodate as much as 1200 worshippers at any given time. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter this beautiful mosque, the view fro the outside shows intricate details of Persian architecture.
For those interested in the arts then it is a must to visit the Dubai Museum. This museum is housed in the Al Fahidi Fort. This fort was built in 1787 and guarded Dubai from land attacks. It served as a palace, garrison and prison before finally becoming a Museum. Many dioramas are in display here which depict early life in Dubai. These displays are colorful and come with light and sound effects. There are also many artifacts made of copper and alabaster which are 3000-4000 years old. |
